Learning from a new generation of Japanese international politics specialists

One of the most consequential developments in the postwar history of U.S.-Japan relations has been the proliferation of dense personal networks and friendships among Japanese and Americans in all walks of life, whether in business, government, academia, the arts, or across the broader civil society. By contrast, half a century ago there were few Americans who had more than superficial knowledge of Japan, and even fewer Japanese with deep ties in American society.
