SIDOARJO, Indonesia -- The compound of the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in the East Java town of Sidoarjo looked quiet. Several students loitered about, appearing to guard the place from unwanted onlookers.

Just last week, the location was a devastating site. Rescue workers raced against time to save dozens of students crushed underneath the rubble of a four-story building that collapsed on Sept. 29 while they were performing afternoon prayers. Dozens survived, but 67 boys between 13 and 20 years old died.
