MANILA -- Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is now in detention at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he faces accusations of crimes against humanity in relation to his war on drugs that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Filipinos.
His legal battle, which is likely to last years, is also the latest twist in the political saga between his family and that of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Their relative popularity will be tested in May's midterm elections, in which the arrested ex-leader is running to become mayor of Davao City, on the southern island of Mindanao.
