TOKYO -- The number of subscribers to the Nikkei Online Edition has surpassed 1 million, the first paid digital news media in Japan to reach that milestone, Nikkei announced Tuesday.
Nikkei Online is Nikkei's flagship Japanese-language news website, which was launched in 2010. Its paid subscribers in 2024 grew by around 100,000 to reach 1.01 million, a 13% increase over December 2023.
Strong uptake from individual subscribers drove the early success of Nikkei Online, but recent years have seen a rapid increase in adoption by corporations, which are using it as a source of essential information and a resource for training, as is the educational sector.
The total number of paid subscriptions to Nikkei's digital media, including services such as the industry-focused NIKKEI Prime series, surpassed 1 million in December 2023, reaching 1.17 million as of December this year.
Including English-language media Nikkei Asia and the Financial Times, which is part of the Nikkei Group, the total number of digital paid subscriptions is 3.7 million. This makes Nikkei the third-largest digital news media provider in the world, after the New York Times and Dow Jones, which publishes The Wall Street Journal.
