TOKYO -- Nikkei Asia took home top honors for technology reporting at the Society of Publishers in Asia Awards for Editorial Excellence on Thursday.
The publication also received an honorable mention in SOPA's excellence in journalistic innovation category. The awards ceremony, which handed out prizes in 21 categories, was held in Hong Kong.
The awards are recognized as Asia's premier media prize, and the global section attracts entries from prominent English-language media organizations around the world.
Nikkei Asia, a Tokyo-based business media platform that publishes online news, analyses and features, were recognized in categories the competition set aside for global media.
The series "China's tech industry fights back" by Cheng Ting-Fang and Lauly Li is a deep dive into how Beijing's determination to overcome U.S. restrictions has transformed the country's tech supply chain.
The first entry in the series, "China's subsea cable drive defies U.S. sanctions," examines the critical but often overlooked realm of geopolitical competition playing out under the waves. Cheng and Li's reporting included exclusive interviews with executives of Chinese subsea cable suppliers that are little-known yet starting to play a more important role in the global subsea cable industry. The story also includes broader perspectives on reporting from Tsubasa Suruga in Singapore and Shunsuke Tabeta in Beijing.
"Inside Huawei's mission to boost China's tech prowess" looks at how the Chinese tech giant has turned itself into a vital supporter of little-known local Chinese players since it was added to a U.S. trade blacklist. Based on numerous exclusive interviews, the piece reveals the progress of Huawei-linked chipmakers and provides insights into how the company has helped local suppliers rapidly increase their technological capabilities.
"China's foldable phones herald conquest of OLED screen market" explains how Beijing's push to localize production to counter U.S. pressure has expanded Chinese dominance of advanced screens, once the domain of South Korean players Samsung and LG.
Hirofumi Yamamoto, Gaku Ito, Hiroki Sakuragi, Shota Fujii, Kento Awashima and Yuichiro Kanematsu received the honrable mention for journalistic innovation for their deep dive into last year's runway collision at Japan's Haneda Airport.
