JPX-Nikkei stock indexes want at least 30% female executives

New criteria will affect JPX-Nikkei Index 400, JPX-Nikkei Mid and Small Cap Index

TOKYO -- JPX Market Innovation & Research (JPXI) and Nikkei decided to raise the gender criteria for candidates of companies included in the JPX-Nikkei Index 400 and the JPX-Nikkei Mid and Small Cap Index, the two index providers said on Monday, aiming to increase the number of women in highly rated companies' decision-making process.

JPXI and Nikkei will change the proportion of female seats to "at least 30%" of board members and executive officers from the ongoing requirement of "at least one female," in line with the initial draft released by the two companies in November last year before it went through the Index Consultation process. The new criteria will be implemented in the periodic review scheduled for August.
