Nikkei Asia has won the top two awards in data visualization at the 2022 Asia Digital Media Awards on Thursday. The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) recognizes outstanding digital media content and services in Asia in these awards.
Nikkei Asia's wins are its firsts in international recognition for visual content. The top prize went to "Tracking how Russia fabricated its pretexts for invading Ukraine," which analyzed posts on Telegram, a social media site widely used in the former Soviet bloc, for fake news Russia was spreading about its invasion of Ukraine.
After identifying accounts linked to the Russian government as being the sources of the fake news, the piece visualized the flow of the spread using a network diagram. It also analyzed Russia's widespread use of artificial intelligence to generate false images.
The second-place prize went to "How the Northern Sea Route will reshape the world," which examined the potential of the Arctic Sea as a shipping route as global warming melts sea ice. A globe was used to compare the distances between the Arctic Sea shipping route and conventional shipping routes, and to visualize the changes in sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. The piece also includes a simulated voyage along the Arctic Sea Route.
